For the past two weeks, our first graders have been exploring the important skill of "identifying words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses." We study this in order to better understand how specific word choices shape a story.
It's been so much fun practicing this through reading poetry, nonfiction, tasting food, designing monsters, writing riddles, and more. We've considered how sensory words or adjectives make the stories we read and write more vivid. In the words of one of the students, these words and phrases make the story you're reading or writing "more full." Finally, knowing about adjectives will help make our nonfiction writing even better.
