On the last day of the school week, students come home with graded assignments in their communication folders. Some of these papers are recording sheets for math games while others might reflect work done during our balanced literacy centers.
When I say that their class work is graded, I really mean that each piece of recorded learning has been evaluated with a check, check plus, or check minus.
What do these symbols mean?
When I say that their class work is graded, I really mean that each piece of recorded learning has been evaluated with a check, check plus, or check minus.
What do these symbols mean?
A check plus means:
-the student completed the entire assignment
-they followed all of the directions
-they completed the work carefully and neatly
-the student completed the entire assignment
-they followed all of the directions
-they completed the work carefully and neatly
A check means:
-the student completed most of the assignment but not all of it
-some of the work is correct
-some of the directions were followed
-the student completed most of the assignment but not all of it
-some of the work is correct
-some of the directions were followed
A check minus means:
-the assignment is incomplete
-the student did not follow the directions
-work does not reflect student's current skill level
-the assignment is incomplete
-the student did not follow the directions
-work does not reflect student's current skill level
From my perspective, every student in every subject area is working towards reaching a different goal. Perhaps one student is working on writing neatly, while another is working on writing complete sentences. Just because a student has not met their goal yet (e.g. writing neatly) does not mean I will evaluate their work with a check minus.
On the last day of the school week (usually Friday), students have the opportunity to choose their favorite work from the week. Students choose from their favorite check plus work, or their favorite check work depending on what is in their file at the end of the week. I hang this work for them to admire and feel proud of for the coming week. They've worked so hard all week!
