Two of the essential questions that we ask throughout first grade social studies are "What makes a community?" and "What can you do in your community to make a difference?"
We learned about different neighborhoods, took a tour of our own ICS neighborhood, and then created a classroom neighborhood on one of our windows. Students considered the various needs and wants of this imagined neighborhood and created places like the following:
-hospitals
-schools
-grocery stores
-apartment buildings
-individual homes
-pet stores (and schools)
-playgrounds
-parks
-diners
-office buildings
-laboratories
Then they created the community members of that neighborhood: doctors, teachers, nurses, shopkeepers, security guards, and scientists.
Students collaborated and named the neighborhood New Northeast Colorhood Lombards Kids. It's quite a mouthful, but a great reflection of their combined perspectives and interests.
Most recently, our neighborhood suffered a tremendous litter problem. We came together to create various solutions, including garbage cans, recycling cans, and jobs for people to remove and recycle our waste.
Finally, we talked about personal responsibility! Several students mentioned that every community member in our neighborhood should have to take care of their trash or throw away something they see on the ground. We talked about how we can safely and responsibly pick up litter in our own playground.
Please enjoy a view of their neighborhood below. It's beautiful!
