When students DO break down a story problem and visualize the sequence, they can unlock what kind of story problem they're solving. Is it about combing two numbers? Am I subtracting and breaking apart numbers? Is this a story problem with missing information?
When student's DON'T break down the story problem first, they usually just combine the numbers which does not necessarily give them the right answer. It does not deepen their understanding of how numbers work.
When your student is solving a story problem for home work, please encourage them to follow the routine seen in the image below.
