Dear Families,
When reading at home, does your student ever come across a word that is challenging for them to figure out? Suggesting a reading strategy is a great way to help them without giving them the answer!
Student's have learned multiple reading strategies. Some of them include the following: flipping the letter sound, cross checking, covering the ending, using the pictures, magic e, 3 sounds of -ed, and so on.
One that we use consistently is affectionately referred to as Chunky Monkey. When a student chunks a word, they are looking for friendly letters or letter chunks that they know. They isolate these letters with their fingers. For example, chunky could be read as ch-un-ky and monkey could be m-on-key. Then, they go back and combine these letter sounds until they can be read fluently. For example, m-on-key becomes mon-key and then monkey.
Take a look at the photos below for an example of what this looks like.

This strategy won't work every time, especially if the word they're reading a word that doesn't follow conventional spelling rules. However, it works most of the time! Suggest it to your student today!
